SuperEfficiencyCore – A Breakthrough for Transformers 

A South Africa–based company, AFD Grid Technologies, has recently announced the development of an advanced transformer platform built on SuperEfficiencyCore, which is a newly synthesised amorphous magnetic material. 

According to the company, transformers using this innovative core material can be up to four times smaller and three times lighter than conventional units of similar ratings. The technology is currently undergoing pilot testing, with 50 distribution transformers deployed across a local South African utility, along with select distribution system operators (DSOs) in the United States. 

Key Advantages of SuperEfficiencyCore transformers  

The ongoing pilot programme aims to validate the performance of SuperEfficiencyCore under real-world grid conditions. Initial findings suggest that the material significantly reduces magnetic losses while enabling highly compact transformer designs. This could help overcome installation constraints in densely populated urban areas, while also lowering transportation and handling costs. 

SuperEfficiencyCore transformers is derived from a newly synthesised alloy developed in South Africa. Early geological assessments indicate that the country possesses substantial reserves of the raw materials required for its production, potentially ensuring long-term availability for several hundred years. 

Field testing is focused on evaluating performance under varying load conditions, thermal stability, and long-term reliability. Industry experts believe that if results meet expectations, this innovation could mark a significant shift in transformer design, particularly for distribution networks where efficiency and space optimisation are critical. 

Potential Advantages for India 

In the Indian context, compact transformers could be especially beneficial in urban areas where space is limited and infrastructure is often congested. Additionally, transformers frequently face operational challenges due to extreme weather conditions and fluctuating loads. The reduced magnetic losses and improved efficiency offered by SuperEfficiencyCore-based transformers could enhance reliability, minimise technical faults, and support more resilient power distribution systems.
